Nominate a dog for an ABOVE & BEYOND Award

Purpose ‐ To celebrate those Leonbergers who demonstrate extraordinary service to humankind.

Time Frame ‐ Nominations will be open commencing May 1 and run through November 30.. The chosen honourees will be announced in November. Selected entries will have their stories published in the Winter edition of Leo By-Lines, and showcased on the Club's Facebook site. A committee delegated by the LCO Board will be responsible for selecting the finalists.

Criteria ‐ On a yearly basis, the ABOVE & BEYOND Awards will honour up to a maximum of Ten (10) dedicated, hardworking Leos for making significant contributions to an individual or community. These Leos impact lives and deserve to be recognized for their abilities.

Awards will be given in each of the following categories

EXEMPLARY COMPANION

Eligibility ‐ Dogs without formal training or certification that have nonetheless distinguished themselves in some way and have made a meaningful contribution to their owners, families or communities.

THERAPY

Eligibility ‐ Certified Therapy Dogs working in hospitals, schools, disaster sites and wherever else the affection of Leos can provide comfort. The purpose of this award category is to encourage therapy work and to recognize those Leos that have also been performing therapy work. Dogs need to be at least one year of age to enter an accredited program, but some therapy organizations require the dog to be 18 months to 2 years of age. It is suggested, but not mandatory, that the Therapy Team of dog & handler be an active member of a recognized therapy organization, if possible. However, we are aware that Teams who are not members of a recognized therapy group have been afforded the opportunity to visit people in nursing homes with their dogs. To be considered for an award in this category, documented proof of a minimum of 50 hours of visits must be presented at the time of nomination.

ASSIST

Eligibility ‐ Assistance dogs who enrich the lives of physically or mentally challenged owners including, but not limited to, guide dogs, seizure-alert dogs, hearing dogs, balance dogs.

SEARCH AND RESCUE

Eligibility ‐ Leos trained to assist in wilderness and urban tracking, natural disasters and locating missing persons.

OTHER HEROIC ACTS

Eligibility ‐ any action by a Leonberger that demonstrate their willingness to come to the aid of a person or animal in distress.

Submission of Nominations

Anyone, including the dog's owner or handler may submit a nomination. The owner/nominator must be a current member of the Leonberger Club of Ontario. All nominations will be forwarded to Glenna Stephens either by email to gstephens@bell.net or by mail to 16 Roberval Circle, Tiny, ON L9M 0E1 and will subsequently be passed to the committee for consideration.

Submission must include

  • Photograph of the dog nominated.
  • A written description of how your Leonberger has demonstrated an achievement.
  • Registered name, call name, age.
  • Owner/nominator name, address, phone and e-mail address.

Due to the pandemic, many dogs have not been able to work in the fields they are trained for. Allowance will be made for dogs distinguishing themselves in any category prior to lockdowns and social distancing rules. In other words, past accomplishments will be recognized.

Chosen honourees will receive an engraved medallion complete with lanyard as a keepsake of their Leo's achievement.
